Dreaded El Chapo's wife is a beauty queen

Following his cunning escape from Altiplano prison on July 11, Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman could be on his way to be with his 25-year-old wife Emma Coronel Aispuro.

Aispuro, the American-born wife of the fugitive drug lord Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzman is a former beauty queen who married the billionaire cartel boss as a teen.

The now 58-year-old Guzman met Aispuro in 2006, when she was just 17.

Within a year of their meeting, Aispuro was named the local 'Coffee and Guava Queen' in the town of Canelas.

Speculations were that it was more than Aispuro's good looks that earned her the crown. In June that year, 'El Chapo' and his gun-toting entourage of hundreds of motorcycle mounted gunmen swarmed into Canelas for a lavish party announcing Aispuro's candidacy.

At the celebrations, the couple announced their plans to marry on her 18th birthday and Coronel ended up becoming 'queen' to the kingpin. The couple married a year later.

In 2011 Aispuro fled to America to give birth to their twin daughters.

According to media reports, the Federal Bureau of Investigation monitored Aispuro's movements as she traveled between the US and Mexico but never charged her with any crimes.

The girls, who like their mother were born with the jurisdiction of the US, hold dual citizenship.

However, Guzman’s name is noticeably missing from the daughters' LA county birth certificates.

Investigators think this is likely because the crime kingpin was wanted both in the United States and Mexico at the time.

Interestingly, Aispuro has other family linkages that tie into her husband's drug trade represented most prominently by an uncle who was Guzman’s former partner before being killed in a shootout with Mexican authorities in July 2010.

Aispuro has kept quiet since Guzman escaped from the maximum-security Altiplano prison outside Mexico City on July 11.
