Keeping in mind the “danger” posed by lingerie mannequins, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation plans to ban the display of bikini-clad mannequins in public places, a move it says will help reduce sex crimes against women.
"Lingerie mannequins promote rapes. Skimpily clad mannequins can pollute young minds. After the Delhi rape case, I felt something had to be done," said Ritu Tawade, the Bharatiya Janata Party corporator who proposed the idea.
The Shiv Sena-led BMC on Tuesday provisionally cleared the proposal, threatening action against shopkeepers and hawkers who display mannequins clad in ladies’ undergarments.
However, Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte is still to approve the proposal which was passed on May 16. If the proposal is cleared, shops and malls in the city will have to remove the “revealing” mannequins.
