Dividing UP: Maya throws ball in Centre's court

By managing her way to get the resolution for division of Uttar Pradesh passed amid noise and din in the state assembly on Monday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has thrown the ball in the centre's court.

Addressing a press conference shortly after ensuring the approval of the resolution in an unprecedented manner, Mayawati said, "Well, we will now forward this resolution to the centre and it is not for them to get an approval of the parliament to see that Uttar Pradesh is divided into four smaller states in the larger interest of the people."

Hitting back at the opposition parties who

created much uproar all through the proceedings of the house, the UP chief minister said, "The opposition was trying to kick up its campaign on a false premise that my government was in a minority."

According to her, "the fact that the house also passed the vote on account was sufficient proof to establish that my government enjoys full support and majority in the House."

Referring to the opposition's repeated charge of terming her UP division move as an "election stunt", she sought to clarify, "I have been advocating for division of this huge state into four states right from the time my government was formed in 2007, so where is the question of any poll stunt."

She blamed the opposition for disrupting the proceedings of the state legislature.
