Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Saturday said that he would extend all possible support to veteran social activist Anna Hazare if he initiates a protest against corruption in Uttar Pradesh.
"If he (Anna Hazare) wants to hold demonstrations in any part of the country, then Uttar Pradesh would be the best place. If he holds a demonstration or fast there, then we (Congress) will also do the same in his support. All the senior leaders of the Congress including me are ready to observe the fast with Anna Hazare," he said.
When asked about the recent attack by Team Anna on the Congress, wherein they asked the voters to inflict a "historic"' defeat on the party in the Hisar by-polls for not bringing the Jan Lokpal Bill, Digvijay Singh said, "He must wait for the approval of the Lokpal Bill. All the Parliamentarians have assured him that his major demands would be included in the Bill; then he should trust them and respect the Indian Parliament."
"There was no need to protest against the Congress and I believe he is surrounded with the kind of people who want to politically exploit him," he added.
Anna Hazare had issued an appeal to the electorate, asking them to defeat the Congress in the by-poll.
Digvijay Singh further accused Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati of exploiting the Dalits.
"Whatever benefit Dalits and tribals have received, it was because of the continuous efforts of the Congress. The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party has only exploited the Dalits," he added.
Hitting out at the Congress, Mayawati had on Friday said the Congress might make either Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar or Union Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde the prime minister for some time to split the Dalit vote ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls in mid-2012.
