Police on Saturday morning killed two suspected militants in an encounter in the Tughlaqabad area, close to some defence establishments, in Delhi.
On a tip off, personnel of the special cell of the Delhi police signaled a car carrying three persons to stop at a checkpost
when it entered Delhi from neighbouring Haryana around 0605 IST, Joint Commissioner Police Neeraj Kumar said.
When the car sped away, the policemen gave chase and, in the ensuing encounter that lasted for about 40 minutes, two militants were killed while the third, who was driving the car, fled under cover of darkness, Kumar said.
A hunt has been launched for the third militant, suspected to have fled towards Faridabad in Haryana. The Haryana police has been alerted, Kumar said.
Two AK 47 rifles, six magazines, three live hand grenades and 94 rounds of ammunition, kept in a gunny bag, were recovered from the car, he said.
A document bearing the name 'Tehreek-e-Ghaznavi', a possible cover name of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, was also recovered from the vehicle, Kumar said.
Militants had planned a major strike on the anniversary of the Babri masjid's demolition or the December 13 attack on Parliament, he said.
The encounter took place close to the offices of the Indian Air Force, BSF, ITBP and CRPF.
