Amid the deadlock over the Gorshkov deal with Russia, the Centre on Friday said that negotiations were on and both sides were trying to find a reasonable solution to the issue.

"First of all, I would like to clarify that at no point of time the Russian government has said that they will take back the deal unless it is settled in such and such time limit," said Defence Minister A K Antony.

He said negotiations were on and the two sides were trying to find a reasonable solution to the issue.

"Both the governments took it at the highest level and after that the negotiations started, Antony said.

Asked whether there was any timeframe for the deal to be concluded, he said, "At this level, I can't say anything. We are looking for a reasonable solution".

Amid India's apparent willingness to pay more for Gorshkov, a high-level Indian team is in Moscow to inspect the Russian aircraft carrier in a fresh bid to break the deadlock over its delivery.

After Russia's insistence on an upward revision of price for the Gorshkov, the Indian side recently indicated willingness to pay more with a senior official saying "the original contract was sketchy".

The Russian demand was earlier opposed by Naval Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta, who publicly said that there should be no revision in the contract.

The Russian side has conveyed that extensive refit work would be necessary on the warship, which will now have to undergo sea trials for a year in Russian waters, under their experts.
