Four Central Reserve Police Force troopers were wounded in a powerful explosion in the Maharaj Gunj locality of the summer capital Srinagar on Sunday afternoon.

A senior police officer told rediff.com that the militants tossed a powerful hand grenade which exploded near a CRPF vehicle outside the Maharaj Gunj police station in the old city. "The grenade exploded inside the vehicle injuring four CRPF troopers. The injured jawans were taken to SMHS hospital for treatment," the officer said.

The explosion in the densely populated area in the old city triggered panic and tension as the security forces surrounded the area for searches.

Sunday's grenade attack followed killing of a special police officer (SPO) by militants in the uptown Jawahar Nagar locality of the city late Friday evening.  The SPO was shot at and killed outside his house. The two attacks came after a lull in the summer capital Srinagar where security forces are already on high alert.
