With the Congress's drubbing in the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh polls, the Communist Party of India on Friday said secularism alone was not enough to resist the 'Modi-brand of communalism'.

"Both imperialism and communalism are dangerous for democracy," CPI general secretary D Raja told PTI. "The Left parties and democratic forces should unite to fight the menace of communalism so that the Bharatiya Janata Party does not have a free march to Delhi," he said.

"If Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government does not change its economic policies and goes ahead with the India-United States nuclear deal, they will face serious consequences. They will have to adhere to the common minimum programme," he said.

Condemning the attacks on Christians in Orissa, Raja said the BJP and pro-Hindutva forces were repeatedly attacking people belonging to minority communities. "It is a matter of grave concern. At this time of rising communalism, we need an alternative to the present political power structure," he said.

The rise of communalism was a warning to all secular forces and the unity and integrity of the country was under threat, he said.
