The CPI, which has sought a review of Left support to the UPA, will critically debate the government's performance and discuss how it should continue its relationship with the ruling coalition at a three-day meet starting on Thursday.

The party's national council will meet after a half-day session of the national executive and finalise its stand on the upcoming vice presidential election.

The meeting would also discuss the prevailing political situation particularly after the recent assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and other states, CPI national secretary D Raja told PTI.

The crucial decision-making bodies of the party would review the relationship between the Left and the UPA and decide on its 'attitude' towards and relationship with the ruling coalition in context of the policies being pursued by the government on various fronts, he said.

Though CPI has called for review of support to the UPA, the CPI(M) has said withdrawal of Left support at this juncture would mean bringing down the government, which would be 'counter-productive' and only help the BJP.

Asked about the stand the CPI was likely to take on the vice presidential poll, Raja said neither the CPI, nor the Left as a whole have discussed any names so far.

"Informal consultations will be held in the coming days among the Left. We have already proposed that since the Presidential nominee is from the Congress party, the Vice Presidential candidate should belong to a non-Congress party," he said. "The Left parties can take the initiative to propose the name for the post of vice president."
