Saying the Congress has an important role to play in restructuring society, Congress Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday exhorted partymen, especially the youth, to combat casteism, fundamentalism and other evils weakening society.

"Congressmen have to bear a number of responsibilities such as combating casteism and fundamentalism, which are weakening society," he said while addressing a meeting of party activists at a college in Thauri in Amethi.

Rahul, who arrived on four-day visit to his parliamentary constituency, stressed that Congress has a rich history and it again has to play an important role in restructuring and reconstructing society.

Appealing to the youth, he said they are the future of the country and have to remain alert on all fronts in order to lead the country.

Referring to the Gram Congress project prepared by him to strengthen the party at the village level, he said the workers working honestly and with dedication would be rewarded.

Earlier, he visited a milk procurement centre at Shukul Bazar, laid the foundation stone of five roads to be built at a cost of Rs 3 crore under the Prime Minister Gramin Sadak Yojna and took stock of facilities provided to patients at the Rajiv Gandhi Arogya Hospital in Raniganj.

He also unveiled the statue of Pt Ram Nayan Misra in Musafirkhana and inaugurated a lawyers chamber in the tehsil premises.
