Reacting sharply to reports that the Central Bureau of Investigation is likely to name late Pramod Mahajan in the spectrum scam, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday said this shows how the Congress has taken the 'misuse' of official agencies to the 'lowest ebb for its political vendetta'.
BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said the Congress is misusing the probe agency and wanted to implicate some National Democratic Alliance leaders in the 2G spectrum scam.
"They were not getting any name from the NDA so they have picked on the name of Pramod Mahajan... One cannot push politics lower than this. This is like pushing political vendetta to the lowest nadir that it can reach," she said.
The main opposition declared that it will fight this move of the ruling party and its persistent interference in the working of CBI 'tooth and nail' both inside and outside Parliament.
"I think by misusing the CBI, Congress has clearly showed to what depths decency in politics can be brought down," Sitharaman said.
The BJP charged that while the ruling party is unfairly targetting the Opposition, its own Cabinet ministers who are reportedly involved in the spectrum scam have not even been questioned.
"Very clearly the accused who are in the Cabinet even today have not been questioned. In fact there is an attempt at stalling the process," Sitharaman said.
The Opposition has alleged that Home Minister P Chidambaram, who held the finance portfolio in United Progressive Alliance-I, played a role in the spectrum scam and demanded his head.
The party said Arun Shourie, who was telecom minister in the NDA government, has been asked questions in such detail by the CBI while UPA Cabinet ministers have been ignored.
He voluntarily appeared before the CBI, Sitharaman said.
