The Supreme Court Tuesday said unauthorised colonies in the capital should not be regularised if the State authorities are not in a position to provide basic amenities.
"In case the state authorities are not in a position to make available the basic services in respect whereof it is admitted that there are severe limitations, there shall be no regularisation of unauthorised colonies," a bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal said hearing a public interest litigation on pollution of the river Yamuna.
The Apex Court took suo motu cognisance of newspaper reports in 1994 regarding pollution of the Yamuna and since then it has been monitoring the progress of cleaning up the river by the State authorities.
