Old man winter continued to send shivers across northern India, claiming another life in Uttar Pradesh and making Delhi  experience the coldest day of this century on Monday.

Four-month-old Imran fell ill and was hospitalised after families living in unauthorised constructions in Raidas Vihar were evicted by the Kanpur Development Authority staff. The doctor who attended to him said the child had taken ill due to the severe cold and died in hospital on Sunday.

The industrial town touched a season's low of 4.1 C on Monday and the death toll in Uttar Pradesh climbed to two with one person having died in Ghaziabad last week.

The winter chill also swept through Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and minimum temperatures hovered between minus and plus five.

The mercury plummetted to a record low of 3.3 (5 five below normal) in the national capital. The city recorded a minimum of 3.4 on December 31, 1999.
