43-year-old cardiologist shot dead in Delhi

A 43-year-old cardiologist was shot dead in central Delhi early Wednesday morning allegedly by a man against whom his maid had complained of harassment, police said.

The incident was reported from Rajinder Nagar at around 2:45 am and the victim has been identified as Sanjeev Dhawan, who worked with the Ganga Ram Hospital, Devesh Srivastava, Additional Commissioner of Police (Central), said.

He was rushed to Ganga Ram Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The suspect Dharmendra Kumar Tandon has been arrested.

Srivastav told media persons that Dharmendra Kumar Tandon who fired and killed heart specialist Sanjeev Dhawan, was arrested from Karol Bagh area within hours the killing.

Dr Dhawan's son Siddarth said Tandon used to harass their maid servant and she had often complained to her employers about it.

"He (Tandon) even went to Ganga Ram to meet my father. He used to threaten the maid and told my father that she was his wife and that Dr Dhawan should hand her over to him. But he refused to oblige. We heard a commotion around 2.30 am. I and my father went out and saw Tandon holding a double-barrel gun clad in army uniform. He fired five times, killed my father and then fled the place," he said.

Tandon has been booked under Sections 302 (intention to kill), 25, 54 and 59 of Indian Penal Act.
