An Indo-Canadian, whose fast food restaurant was destroyed in a suspected arson attack in Vancouver last week, has committed suicide.
Manjeet Nanda's body was found on a beach near Squeamish while her car was recovered between Furry Creek and Porteau Cove on Friday, the police said, adding the death was a suicide.
Nanda's restaurant and a few other shops were gutted when an explosion ripped through a commercial block in the city. The mother of three and her husband Harjit were questioned by authorities, but never officially suspected in the case.
Investigators believe a fire was deliberately set inside Nanda's restaurant with the use of an accelerant. The resulting explosion demolished the Taco Del Mar and damaged neighbouring shops.
Shortly after the explosion, officers placed a suspect in custody when he arrived at Surrey Memorial hospital. He was badly injured and had burns covering roughly 40 per cent of his body. The police have not yet laid charges or identified the suspect.
"I am very shaken up," Nanda had said after the incident. She had denied having anything to do with the explosion.
The restaurant was believed to be up for sale. No one except the suspect was hurt.
People who knew Nanda describe her as a hard worker.
The Province newspaper had reported last week that she looked tired after the incident, and believed the police were blaming her for the explosion.
Nanda had reportedly left a suicide note saying the scrutiny she and her family had experienced was too much to handle.
Nanda had been reported missing on Thursday night. The police found her body floating in the water underneath a cliff in Furry Creek.
