April 24, 2008 12:57 IST

A 15-member delegation of the Myanmar Army, led by Brigadier Gen Tin Maung Ohn, is on a visit to the headquarters of 3 Corps at Rangapahar near Dimapur to discuss border issues between India and Myanmar.

Defence sources in Kohima, on Thursday, said the delegation of Myanmar Army held a meeting with their Indian counterpart, headed by Maj Gen T S Handa, GOC, 57 Mountain Division, and discussed various issues, including cross-border insurgency, arms smuggling and border management. The delegation also called on Lt Gen M S Dadwal, GOC, 3 Corps.

The meeting laid the foundation for better understanding, friendly relations between two neighbours and will also help reduce insurgency through joint efforts. This type of liaison meeting is held twice a year to review and discuss issues of mutual interest between the two armies.

The next meeting between the countries will be held in Myanmar. The Myanmar Army delegation will leave for Kolkata on Thursday.

It may be mentioned that the states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh share international boundary with Myanmar lined by dense jungles, which provide safe haven to insurgent outfits, sources said.
