Don-turned-Bahujan Samaj Party member of Parliament Dhananjay Singh was arrested in Lucknow on Sunday evening in connection with his alleged involvement in a double murder case.

According to state police chief Brij Lal, "Dhananjay was arrested for the murder of two members of an OPBC Nishad community in 2010 in Kirakat town of Jaunpur district, about 230 km from Lucknow."

He said, "This followed his indictment by the crime branch of Criminal Investigation Department to which the case was entrusted shortly after the incident."

Dhananjay, who has more than a dozen criminal cases pending against him, was also among suspects in the multi-crore National Rural Health Mission  scam that rocked Uttar Pradesh earlier this year and even led to the murder of two chief medical officers.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 2009. Earlier, he was associated with the Samajwadi Party, but switched loyalties to the BSP after Mayawati's rise to power in 2007.
