Coming to the defence of his counterpart in Pakistan, US Ambassador to India David C Mulford on Friday said Ryan Crocker's remarks on the Mumbai blasts had not been reported correctly.

"I have looked at his statement... The statement as reported is not the true reflection of what he was saying," Mulford told reporters when asked about Crocker's reported remarks that India should not voice allegations against Pakistan over the Mumbai blasts publicly.

Crocker's remarks had on Thursday evoked sharp objection from India which reminded the US envoy to Pakistan that democratic governments had responsibility to keep its public fully informed on issues and that such a comment was not expected from a diplomat of a democratic nation.

Mulford said the comment was not reported correctly and he did not get the same perception about Crocker's remarks as had been reported.

The US envoy to Pakistan had reportedly said that New Delhi should give evidence to Islamabad rather than voicing allegations in public.

His remarks came after Mumbai police asserted that probe into the July 11 serial blasts had revealed involvement of Inter Services Intelligence and Pakistan-based terror groups like Lashkar-e-Tayiba.
