The judicial probe into the alleged escape of a Ghatkopar blast accused took a new turn on Monday with a co-accused in the case informing a special court that he was threatened by a constable against tendering evidence.

Dr Mohammed Abdul Matim Abdul Basit, accused in the Ghatkopar blast case, was examined as a witness in a probe ordered by the court in the alleged escape of Sayyed Khwaja Yunis from police custody on January seven.

Matim informed designated judge A P Bhangale that when he was brought to the court a constable told him: "Chutna hai ki pareshan hoke phasna hai (Do you want to be discharged or get into trouble)."

Matim told the court that the constable was not escorting him from jail but he would be able to identify him. The court has recorded Matim's statement.

The policemen were also told to keep away from accused.

Matim and Zahir Ahmed Bashir Ahmed Sheikh, another person accused in the case, were brought to the court as they had written letters from jail stating that they had knowledge about Sayyed Khwaja's whereabouts and wanted to throw light on the aspect.

On a complaint made by Khwaja's father, the court had ordered an inquiry into his alleged escape.

According to the police, Sayyed allegedly escaped when a police jeep in which he was being taken to Aurangabad for investigations met with an accident near Ahmednagar.

Four cops escorting him were suspended and have appeared as witnesses before the court.
