A youth was killed and 10, including seven policemen, injured on Monday when angry residents, protesting against the killing of a person, attacked the police station in Khagaria and burnt the jeep of the Deputy Superintendent of Police in this north Bihar town.

The police said unidentified assailants shot dead Subhash, an employee of a prominent businessman of the town, while he was on his way to deposit cash in the State Bank of India branch at Saagarmal Chowk and looted the money.

The incident sparked violent protests in the town with angry residents coming out on the streets, attacking the town police station and the policemen. They went on to burn the jeep of the DSP and a fire tender.

As policemen retaliated by throwing stones back at the violent mob and fired rubber bullets, a stray bullet hit a youth who died on the spot while three persons suffered injuries.

Denying the youth was killed in police firing, Khagaria district Superintendent of Police Ajit Joy said it was possible someone in the mob may have been carrying a firearm.

He claimed that the policemen had fired only rubber bullets and burst teargas shells.

Seven policemen were injured in stone-throwing, he said.

The tension prompter police to intensify patrolling in the town.
