Bihar: Convict marries widow of brother he killed

Twelve year after he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his own elder brother in Bihar's Gaya district, Monarik Yadav, 40, has married his widow sister-in-law Malo Devi, 45, at a temple.

Yadav, who is serving life term for murder of elder brother Ramjatan Yadav, in Bihar’s only open jail in Buxar district, was accepted as husband by Malo Devi recently.

Open Jail Superintendent A K Ambastha said the wedding was solemnised in a simple way in the court and at a temple in Buxar, about 125 km from state capital Patna.

Interestingly, the marriage rituals were conducted by Ghanshayam Pandey, a priest who is also a lifetime convict

in the jail.

Yadav was shifted to Buxar open jail last December from Bhagalpur central jail. He has already served 12 years in the jail.

Yadav is one of the 74 inmates who are at present staying in the Buxar open jail that was set up in 2012.

The open jail is spread across 42 acres, and houses low-risk
prisoners who have served at least half of their prison term and
consistently maintained good behaviour during their stay in jail.

The jail has only four-foot-high boundary walls. The inmates can venture out of the jail at 6 am and return by 7 pm.

They are also provided work and are enrolled in different vocational courses.

The jail has a school for the children of the prisoners, a community hall and a park inside its sprawling campus.
