Bangalore blast: Police don't rule out use of IED

Preliminary investigations into Wednesday’s blast outside the BJP office in Bangalore point towards a timer device that was used to trigger the explosion.

The police also do not rule out the use of an improvised explosive device which could have been used in the blast.

Till now 16 people have been injured in the blast, including eight police personnel.

Although a lot of investigation is based on theory at the moment, the police say that taking into consideration the sheer intensity of the blast, it becomes evident that it was assembled by a professional and aimed at causing a huge impact.

The police have taken the hard disk attached to the close circuit television on top of the BJP office which is hardly 100 meters from the blast site. There are traffic cameras as well which are being examined, the police also add.

A team of the National Investigation Agency has also reached the blast site. The NIA is assisting the Bangalore police in the investigations. In addition, the dog squad and also the forensics team have visited the site.

The police say that there are no clues yet and a motorcycle that was parked at the spot is being examined.

There are two versions to the blast -- one it could have been hurled by two persons, and the next it could have been planted on the bike itself and triggered by a timer.

Residents of the area say that the sound was loud and it caused quite a lot of damage. Some of the buildings in the area shook due to the blast, the people of the area also point out.

The police, however, say that it was targeted at the BJP office.

The culprits knew that they could not reach the office due to heavy security and hence decided to plant it a 100 meters away in order to cause a major scare.
