A former Gujarat police officer on Monday said the police were not aware of the attack on the Best Bakery in Vadodara on March 1, 2002.

D D Tuteja, former police commissioner of Vadodara city, was deposing before the commission probing the Godhra train carnage and the riots that followed.

Deposing before retired judges G T Nanavati and K G Shah, Tuteja said the police got to know of the incident only on March 2.

During advocate Mukul Sinha's cross-examination,

Tuteja said curfew was imposed in five sensitive areas including Panigate where Hanuman Tekri and the bakery was located.

Questions about the Godhra case

He said somehow the police did not come to know about the attack.

"I visited the bakery the next day and ordered a probe immediately. During the probe, it was revealed that the phone connection of the bakery was cut and this could have been the reason why the victims couldn't inform the police on time," Tuteja said.
