The Assam police has stumbled upon a store room of explosives, which belongs to the banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom, in Guwahati. The explosives stockpile is strategically located in the heart of Guwahati, near the Army's biggest transit camp in the Northeast and the railway station.
The recovery was made after the arrest of Champak Sharma, an ULFA cadre, while he was on his way to collect extortion money from a Wintrobe Nursing Home on Tuesday. An M-20 pistol and six rounds of ammunition were found in Sharma's possession.
The arrested militant belongs to the 709 battalion of the ULFA and hails from Baruajani village under Kamalpur police station of Kamrup district. Immediately after the arrest, the police recovered five kilograms of RDX explosives, a large number of splinters, bomb sealing materials and ammunition of SLR from a rented house near the Army transit camp.
The police informed that two more ULFA cadres were staying in the rented room inside the railway colony. An unsuspecting Railway employee had let out the room to ULFA cadres.
Earlier, the police had received information about the ULFA's plan to carry out a series of explosions in Guwahati.
