Seven militants, including three of the People's United Liberation Front, were killed on Wednesday in two separate encounters with the Assam Rifles' personnel in Bishenpur and Thoubal districts of the state.
Sources said there was heavy exchange of fire between personnel of 7th battalion of the Assam Rifles at Moirang Thanga Lawai Maning in Bishenpur district.
Four militants were killed while some others escaped during the encounter, they said. In a separate incident, three militants of People's United Liberation Front were killed at Sora area in Thoubal district, sources said, adding that some weapons, including an AK 56 rifle, a double barrel rifle, a grenade and some rounds of ammunition were recovered from the spot.
Meanwhile, Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta reviewed the law and order situation in Manipur in the wake of stepped-up violence in the border state, official sources said.
The home secretary was accompanied by Governor S S Sidhu, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and other state officials. Gupta later left for Delhi on Wednesday afternoon.
