Assam: Three killed, two injured in ambush

Uneasy calm in Assam's North Cachar hill district was disrupted on Monday when three persons including a policeman were killed and two others injured when suspected Naga rebels ambushed a police vehicle between Purana Leikul and Hindu Impoi, about 15 kilometers away from Mahun under Mahur police station, at about 1.30 pm.

The incident took place when a group of police personnel along with two civilians were coming from Laisong area in a mini-bus that belongs to a construction company.

Police informed that slain persons included one Special Task Force jawan of Assam Police and two civilians (villagers)

including one girl. All of them died on the spot. The two injured were identified as STF assitant sub-inspector Khitish Bora and STF jawan Rantu Khongia. They were airlifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Killed persons were identified as Lomet Turung, Namjuchung Newme (19) and his sister(10). Security forces have launched a combing operation in the area following the incident.
