The Assam police on Friday night arrested three hardcore militants belonging to the proscribed United Liberation Front of Assam  along with arms and ammunition from Laru area along Assam-Meghalaya border under Hamren police station in Karbi Anglong hill district of Assam.

The police said that one AK-56 assault rifle, 22 rounds of ammunition and two magazines, mobile phones and SIM cards were recovered from the possession of militants who were identified as Ramchandra Rongpi, Kharsing Rongpi and Longsing Bey.

A team of policemen had been camping in the remote area in the wake of information about presence of a group of hardcore ULFA militants led by one most wanted ULFA leader Nayan Medhi.

There was even an encounter between the police and a group of suspected ULFA militants in the area on June 16 last. No one was injured in that exchange of fire as the militants managed to flee.
