An army court in Jodhpur on Tuesday dismissed a major from service and sentenced him to three years' rigorous imprisonment for faking encounters on Siachen glacier with the aim of winning gallantry medals.

"Major Surinder Singh has been found guilty of all charges by the General Court Marshal..." an army spokesman in New Delhi said quoting the court.

The court martial proceedings against Singh, already under suspension, began after the mandatory court of inquiry earlier recommended disciplinary action against him.

The officer was commander of Alpha Company with 5/5 Gorkha Rifles when he filmed the fake encounters in August-September 2003.

"As far as the rigorous imprisonment is concerned, I will go to the high court," Major Singh said reacting to the judgment. "If required, I will not hesitate to even move the Supreme Court."

He said he had full faith that the "law of the country is not in such a bad shape like the army".

He criticised army chief N C Vij, who took a "personal vindictive stand" against him.

This is the third time in a matter of weeks that military courts have handed out stiff sentences to errant officers.

Earlier, a colonel was dismissed on charges of faking encounters in the Northeast and a brigadier was hauled up for selling canteen liquor to private parties.
