The army has in principle decided to take in more cadets for the Short Service Commission Course at the Officers Training Academy in Srinagar to meet the shortage of officers, which ranges between 10,000 and 14,000.

It also proposes to increase the number of women cadets from the present 75 per batch to 200 in a phased manner, general officer commanding-in-chief of Southern Command, Lieutenant General B S Takhar said on Friday.

The army, he said, is also considering increasing the short term commission from 10 years to 14 years and subsequently to 19 years "as per the general demand of women officers, as they want to serve the country more".

Earlier, addressing cadets after reviewing a passing out parade, Gen Takhar stressed the need for them to follow the traditions that the army stood for.
