On the right is Lieutenant General Manoj Pande, the Nagpur-born Eastern Army Commander, who will take over as the vice chief of army staff when Lieutenant General Chandi Prasad Mohanty, the current vice chief, retires on January 31.
General Pande is tipped to succeed the Pune-born General Naravane when the COAS retires in April or earlier, if the government appoints him as the chief of defence staff.
