In an indication of furthering Indo-American military ties, Army chief General Deepak Kapoor will go on a six-day visit to the US beginning July 20.

During the visit, Kapoor is scheduled to interact with senior military and civilian defence hierarchy including their Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman, US Army chief and Central Command chief, among others to discuss contemporary strategic issues such as US' newly unveiled Af-Pak policy and South Asian regional security situation, an Army spokesperson said in New Delhi on Thursday.

His discussions with the US defence officials would delve on defence cooperation including joint training and exercises, exchanges and military equipment.

The Indian General would also go around important US military training institutions and operational headquarters to get a glimpse of the organisation, doctrinal concepts and facilities for deployment of US Army on a global scale.

"The Indian Army chief's US visit comes at a time when the bilateral relations are on an upswing and there is a consensus from both sides to take the strategic partnership to a higher level for synergised and concerted efforts to combat the scourge of global terrorism and to bring peace and stability in the region," the spokesperson said in a statement.

"US and India share common core values and have convergence of views and interests on many issues that affect the world order today. The number of bilateral agreements signed between our countries in the recent past in diverse fields including the civil nuclear deal is a testimony to our growing strategic partnership," he added.
