Vinita Kamte, wife of 26/11 martyr police officer Ashok Kamte, pardoned a thief who had stolen jewelry worth lakhs of rupees from her home in Pune, the Bihar police said on Thursday.

Kamte not only pardoned Jaiprakash Shah but also petitioned the local court on Wednesday to release him in the case.

Shah, a resident of a village in Chapra, had been working in the Kamtes' house in Pune since he was a child. After the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008, in which Ashok Kamte was gunned down by terrorists Ajmal Kasab and Abu Ismail, Shah
fled with the jewelry from Kamte's house.

Last year the Bihar police recovered the stolen jewelry from Shah's house, following which he was arrested and sent to jail.

According to officials in the chief judicial magistrate's court in Chapra, Vinita Kamte met the judge, Peush Srivastava, and requested him to release Shah as she had pardoned him.

The police have handed over the stolen jewelry to her. "She visited Chapra after the CJM's court asked her to appear in person to collect the recovered jewelry," a police official said.
