The incident took place near MSEB office, Morivali, at around 10 am when Gunjal was on the way to his office. As many as 13 persons attacked him with swords and other sharp-edged weapons, the police said.
Gunjal was rushed first to Central Hospital, Ulhasnagar, and from there to a private hospital in Kalyan where he died while undergoing treatment.
The police suspect that political rivalry could be the reason for the murder. Nobody had been arrested yet, said Gajanan Kabdule, Thane police spokesperson. A probe is on.
