A team of Chinese and American scientists discovered a way to prevent the deadly HIV virus from spreading through the body.

Their most important finding is a compound that can occupy a gap in a human cell ordinarily attacked by the HIV virus, experts from the University of Science and Technology of China were quoted as saying in China Youth Daily.

Usually the HIV virus enters a cell through this gap and begins duplicating itself immediately, causing the breakdown of the body's immune system, they explained.

This finding provides a new method for further clinical research of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, said the experts.

The research was a joint undertaking by experts from the university based in Hefei, capital of Anhui Province, and researchers from the United States.

The discovery has been published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Experts said that further research work will be done in the next three to five years.

According to statistics, there are 16,000 new HIV cases everyday and five deaths caused by the virus every minute across the world.
