The European Union is fully supporting Indian participation in an international project that aims to produce energy through fusion and expects an agreement in this direction will be signed in a few months.

"A fact finding mission is in India to analyse Indian capacity for participation in the ITER project," Dr Achilleas Mitsos, Director General, Directorate General for Research and Technological Development, European Commission told reporters on Wednesday night.

"We hope India will be a full partner. In few months time, an agreement is expected to be signed," he said. "EU is hand-in-hand with India. We are sure Indian participation will be realised."

It has been decided to set up ITER in Cadarache, France. Currently besides EU, United States, China, Russia, Japan and South Korea are participating in the project.

India would have to put at least 10 percent of scientific, managerial and industrial inputs in the project, he said. The project is expected to be realised in about 30 years, he said. It is expected to cost $10 billion in the coming decade.
