Sharjah deports Indian gynaecologist

August 09, 2006 14:28 IST

A 30-year-old Indian woman gynaecologist, who was sentenced to six-month imprisonment for attempting to kidnap a newborn baby from a Sharjah hospital in December, has been deported.

The gynaecologist went to the hospital during visiting hours but stayed overnight to pick up an Iraqi child in a carrier bag at 0400hrs only to be caught by nurses who alerted the security, news reports said.

Her lawyer said she was under psychological pressure from her husband, since they do not have children.

On June 20, the appeal court in Sharjah rejected the case and upheld the lower court's verdict of six month imprisonment and deportation.

The woman, whose name was not revealed, served her jail term from December 3 last year until June 3.
