Abu Ghraib 'tip of iceberg'

April 28, 2005 10:52 IST
The abuses at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison were just the "tip of the iceberg" of US mistreatment of Muslim prisoners, says The New York-based Human Rights Watch.

The abuses at Abu Ghraib are part of a larger pattern of US rights violations of detainees in Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere, it said.

The group expressed concern that the United States had not stopped the use of 'illegal coercive interrogation.'

So far, nine detainees have been known to have died in US custody in Afghanistan while at least 11 al Qaeda suspects have also "disappeared" in US custody.

The statement by the Rights Group came on the eve of the first anniversary of publication of photos showing humiliation and mistreatment of prisoners at the Iraqi jail.
