Final counting in Nandigram begins, Mamata leads

May 02, 2021

Final round of counting begins in Nandigram. Mamata Banerjee is leading with just over 800 votes. Nails bitten to the quick. This is why every vote counts.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee left Bhawanipore, her two-term constituency, to contest from Nandigram, which is the fiefdom of Suvendu Adhikari, who quit the party to join BJP in December opening up a host of defections.

A while ago, Adhikari was leading by 6 votes.

Nandigram is one of the two cradles of the land acquisition protests, the other being Singur, that earned her the image of Bengal's "agni kanya (fiery woman)' and propelled her to power topelling the Left rule of 34 years.
