Armed and ready with evidence, Jatley tells Karti's lawyer

March 05, 2018
The second part of the Budget session of Parliament began today, but was adjourned for the day soon after.

As MPs converged upon the Central Hall of Parliament, the conversation after initial pleasantries, veered towards the arrest of Karti Chidambaram, former union minister P Chidambaram's son.

Interestingly, Arun Jaitley told Karti's lawyer, Abishek Manu Singhvi, that the the government had a solid case against Karti and the CBI had the best legal team.

Jaitley said the government depended on four pieces of evidence and not just on one statement by Indrani Mukherjee. The CBI recorded Mukherjee's statement before a Magistrate, under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code, where she said that she and her husband Peter Mukerjea met the then finance minister P Chidambaram in his office in North Block seeking clearance for foreign investments.

Jaitley added that during the trial, the government will bring out more evidence which is in the possession of the CBI. Singhvi replied that he had acted on the basis of a brief from his client and did not depend on outside evidence.
