Poll panel to get new space to hold hearings

January 18, 2017

The Election Commission has converted its meeting room into a makeshift judicial court to hear the petitions against the disqualification of 27 AAP MLAs over holding office of profit.

The EC has been reeling under a severe space crunch, which was brought home to it during the hearings over the battle for the Samajwadi Party's election symbol, when advocates and senior politicians had to stand for hours together in a cramped space.

The CEC, Nasim Zaidi, has since ordered that there should be a spacious court-room to hear the 27 MLAs and the battery of advocates, following which the meeting room was turned into the venue for the hearing.

But this is only a temporary solution, as next month the Election Commission is likely to have an alternate building to hear cases involving political parties.
