In the backdrop of the terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday apprised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of the country's internal security situation.

During the 40-minute meeting, Chidambaram apprised Singh of the steps being taken by the government to tighten internal security, official sources said.

Singh, who resumed official work on Wednesday after a redo bypass surgery on January 24, was also informed by the home minister of the progress made by the ministry in strengthening security and vigil across the country, particularly on its long borders.

The meeting came a day after Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Robert Mueller met Chidambaram and discussed about terrorism around the world with special reference to the Mumbai attacks and on the need to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Tuesday's terrorists attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore and the massive security arrangements for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections are understood to have figured in the meeting between the prime minister and Chidambaram.
