A huge cache of arms and ammunition belonging to the banned United Liberation Front of Asom were recovered by the police from Sadiya while the Army shot dead two militants in Bongaigaon district on Saturday.
During a raid conducted on the basis of specific information, the Assam police stumbled upon a cache of 27 AK 56 assault rifles, 117 magazines and 400 ammunition hidden in the granary of a village household at Kukurmara village in Sadiya sub-division of Tinsukia district of Assam.
The arms and ammunition belonged to the banned ULFA, which is now on the run in Upper Assam areas, after security forces stepped up its operations.
Meanwhile, leader of the pro-talks faction of the ULFA, Jiten Dutta, claimed that it was his faction that tipped the Assam police about the hidden cache of arms and ammunition.
In a separate incident, Army personnel from the 4 Kumaon regiment gunned down two militants belonging to Meghalaya People's Liberation Front, following an encounter at Singimari in Bongaigaon district of western Assam, bordering Meghalaya.
The army recovered two pistols and ammunition from the slain ultras. One of the slain ultras was identified as John Jubli Marak, a top leader of the MPLF that is active in Garo hills districts of the state.
