A young woman producer of a news channel was shot dead in the early hours of Tuesday at a posh area of south-west Delhi while she was on her way back from work.

Soumya Viswanathan, 27, who worked as a producer with Headlines Today, was found dead in her car on Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj locality at around 3:30 a.m., a senior police official said.

Her car was found rammed into the divider of the road and she was seated in the driver's seat, the official said.

Viswanathan, who hails from Kerala, was rushed to AIIMS where she was declared brought dead. Doctors found a bullet in the right side of her head while there was a bullet on one of the tyres of the car, the official said.

Viswanathan had volunteered to stay back in the office located at Jhandewalan after hearing about the low-intensity explosions in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

However, the official said they were yet to ascertain the sequence of events and investigating various angles.

Investigators are trying to ascertain whether anyone else was in the car at the time of incident and whether the incident was result of road rage.

"It could be personal enmity also. We are probing all angles," the official said.

The autopsy has been conducted and the body has been handed over to the family.
