Pakistan allowed the US to conduct limited operations in its territory against Al Qaeda and Taliban militants during the reign of former president Pervez Musharraf, ex-foreign minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri has said.

"Pakistan had allowed the US to conduct limited operations," Kasuri, a close confidant of Musharraf, told Geo News channel in an interview.

"We could not go to the limits that were demanded by the US," he said. Asked about the ongoing army operations against the militants, he said Pakistan's armed forces were raised to fight India and they would have to get training for guerrilla warfare.

Pakistan is facing difficulties in securing a civil nuclear deal on the lines of the US-India atomic cooperation pact due to the proliferation charges levelled against its nuclear scientist A Q Khan, Kasuri said.

However, India's civil nuclear technology agreements with other countries could pave the way for Pakistan to achieve similar pacts, he said.

Kasuri said Pakistan is adhering to safeguards of international standard for the security of its nuclear programme.

Several security agencies, including the National Command Authority, are ensuring the security of the nuclear programme, which is in "safe hands", he said.
