A dozen paramilitary, central reserve police force (CRPF) troopers and policemen were injured in a North Kashmir grenade blast inside a police station on Friday morning.

Police said militants fired a rifle grenade at the heavily guarded north Kashmir Baramulla police station, 54 km from Srinagar on Friday morning.

"The grenade exploded in the compound of the police station, injuring 12 security men. All the injured were evacuated to hospital for treatment.

The area around the police station building is being searched," a senior police officer said.

This is the first militant attack in the valley, after the announcement of the state assembly polls spread over two months beginning November 17.

Baramulla town has been witnessing violent protests in past ten days in which one youth was killed and scores others wounded.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.
