Chatterjee, Indian Administrative Service officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre of 1974 vintage, was earlier posted as Officer on Special Duty to Congress president Sonia Gandhi when she was Leader of Opposition.in the Lok Sabha. Chatterjee had also been posted to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.
As secretary in the PMO, Chatterjee was responsible for all appointments of bureaucrats above the rank joint secretary.
