An earthquake of mild intensity rocked Srinagar and adjoining areas early on Thursday. This was the fifth earthquake of mild intensity to hit Srinagar since February 20.

Though the tremor was mild, the impact felt was disproportionately high. It woke up people and forced them out of their houses.

A spokesman of the Indian Meteorological Department said that the tremors, which occurred at 4.27 am, lasted only a few seconds. He said the epicenter of the 3.9 magnitude earthquake was at 34.1 Latitude (North) and 74.6 Longitude (East).

People rushed out of their homes in panic in spite of the cold. There was no report of any loss of life or damage to property, official sources said.

Srinagar had experienced tremors on February 20 and 25 and two on March 1. These tremors were recorded between 2.9 and 4.1 magnitude.

Srinagar falls in Seismic Zone-V and other parts of Jammu and Kashmir fall in Seismic Zone IV.
