Two notices to Raj leave MNS plans in jeopardy

March 04, 2008 20:34 IST

A showcause notice from the Mumbai police and a prevention notice from the Pune police to Raj Thackeray have put Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in a tight spot as the party may not be able to celebrate its second foundation day on March 9.

The Mumbai police served a show cause notice on Raj Thackeray on Tuesday asking why the gag order against him should not be extended while Pune police has restricted him from addressing public rallies till March 13 in Pune city.

"Raj has received a notice today at Pune airport preventing him from holding a rally in Pune," MNS spokesman Shirish Parkar said.

The MNS has planned a rally at Shivaji Park, Mumbai on March 9 on party's second foundation day, but has yet to get police permission.

"The police has not given permission for the rally and the prevention order is applicable on whole party," Parkar said.

Raj had made inflammatory statements against members of North Indian community which resulted in incidents of violence across Maharashtra last month.

The Mumbai police had imposed a prohibitory order against Thackeray on February 11 preventing him from addressing public rallies or press conferences.

The order was later extended till March 3, and was upheld by the Bombay High Court despite Thackeray challenging it.
