June 05, 2008

A mob of around 70 people on Thursday attacked Loksatta newspaper editor Kumar Ketkar's residence in Thane to stage their protest against an editorial.

The editorial of the newspaper referred to the installation of Shivaji's statue in Mumbai.

According to the sources, the angry mob, belonging to the Shiv Sangram group made an unsuccessful attempt to enter Ketkar's house at around 1015 hours.

They banged the main entrance of the house. Having failed to enter the house, they became furious and pelted stones on the house breaking its window glasses.

The mob also smeared black paint at the entrance door of the house. Immediately after the incident, the police said they nabbed five people from the mob.

All the members of the mob had wooden blocks and sticks with them as they had aimed to hurt Ketkar.

According to the police, the mob could not enter the editor's house. Therefore, the inmates, including Ketkar and his wife were safe, otherwise the mob would have attacked them.

The Shiv Sangram group is led by Vinayak Mete, originally of the Nationalist Congress Party, headed by Sharad Pawar.

Tension prevailed in the area after the incident.
