At least 11 people, including three policemen, were injured in fresh violence in Jammu where protesters defied the curfew at a few places as rest of the Jammu region observed a shutdown on Monday over the Amarnath land row.

Security forces fired in the air to scatter protesters who, defying the curfew, took to the streets and fought pitched battles with the police at Muthi on the outskirts of the city.

Eleven people, three of them policemen, were injured in the violence, official sources said, adding that the Rapid Action Force personnel fired warning shots in the air after the baton-charge and teargassing proved ineffective.

Skirmishes also took place between protesters and police at the Parade Ground in the heart of the city, the sources said.

Curfew remained in force for the second consecutive day today in the trouble-torn city where tension ran high after violence in the past two days left scores injured.

"The curfew will continue in Jammu city, Muthi, Bantalab, Mishriwala, Pukhoo and Nagrota," said Deputy Commissioner (Jammu) Mandeep K Bandari.

The situation was tense but under control, he said adding at present, there would be no relaxation in the curfew.

The rest of the Jammu region, where prohibitory orders had been promulgated, observed a shutdown, called by the Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti, which is spearheading the stir over the land revocation row.

The Samiti, a conglomeration of 35 political, social and religious outfits, is demanding the removal of Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra and restoration of land to the Amarnath Shrine Board.

The call for the general strike is backed by the Shiv Sena, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
